WhatsApp Business API, defined

The WhatsApp Business API (part of the WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta's programmatic interface that lets a business message customers on WhatsApp at scale — typically from a CRM or other software, rather than by hand. Meta's Cloud API is hosted by Meta and lets businesses "programmatically message" users, sending everything from simple text to rich, interactive messages .

How it differs from the WhatsApp apps

It is distinct from the consumer WhatsApp app and the WhatsApp Business app, both of which are for one-to-one chat on a phone. The API is for software-driven messaging at scale: approved templates, automated routing, and integration with your systems. A business can even connect an existing WhatsApp Business app number to the Cloud API.
